Sensory Neuropathy Testing

The Border Collie Society of America is assisting the Animal Health Trust (www.aht.org.uk) in the United Kingdom to estimate the frequency of the newly identified mutation for Sensory Neuropathy (SN) in Border Collies in the USA. DNA samples will also be tested for the mutations responsible for vitamin B12 Deficiency (Imerslund-Grasbeck Syndrome, IGS) and Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) to obtain an estimate of the frequency of those mutations in our population. To achieve the broadest possible sample of U.S. Border Collies, we need to recruit at least 150 different dogs, with 300 unique parents. The Animal Health Trust will provide DNA testing for a reduced price of £20 (compared to normal £68 fee). Only one dog per owner may be enrolled in the study.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please send the following information to BCSA Health Chair Frances Hannen:

  • Dog’s registered name and number:
  • Dog’s age and sex:
  • Sire’s registered name and number:
  • Dam’s registered name and number:
  • Owner’s name:
  • Owner’s mailing address:
  • Owner’s email:
  • Owners best telephone number:

If your dog is selected for the study (based on unique parentage), you will be provided with a kit for DNA collection (simple cheek swab) once you have paid the test fee and US mail charges. After the DNA is collected, you will send it directly to the UK Animal Health Trust at your own cost.

In the interest of the breed as a whole, we will accept samples from Border Collies that are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC), the American Border Collie Association (ABCA), or other reputable registries. BCSA members will be given preference.
