LAURA OVERMYER

Return to Junior's Program Central

I own a total of seven Border Collies. My first Border Collie was a smooth coated, prick ear that was bred entirely for herding cattle. While she has been a great dog and we have earned the titles of CD, CDX, NA, high in trial at the Illinois State Fair and Grand Champions at the State dog show in Obedience.  I have had multiple health and emotional issues with her. Sadly, I have to retire Blitz because she has hip dysplasia and arthritis in her shoulders.

I now have a new dog that will be my main obedience, agility and showmanship dog. He has a good start, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. I have learned the importance of breeding dogs responsibly and I hope to show and breed Border Collies responsibly for the rest of my life. I love Border Collies because they are a great dog that can do most anything.

My first love will always be obedience; however, I have thoroughly enjoyed agility, conformation and junior showmanship and hope to continue on with all of these venues. So far I have finished a total of five Border Collies to their breed championship. I also show other dogs and other breeds for anyone who asks me too.

I am a senior at Byron High School and am active with the marching band symphonic band, National Honor Society, FFA and 4-H. I am president of our 4-H club and am a 4-H Ambassador and president the 4-H federation. My other 4-H projects include, Beef, sheep, rabbits, cats, poultry, photography, visual arts, veterinary science, advanced animal study, prairie plants, horticulture and wood working. I also race in the All American Soap Box Derby and am employed at Pines Meadow Veterinary Clinic in Oregon, and Byron Feed and Seed.

I am really sad to say that this is my last year as a junior handler. I have so much enjoyed showing as a junior and want to thank all the great people who have helped me and encouraged me over the years. I plan to attend Augustana College in the fall of 2008 where I will study pre-veterinary medicine. I would eventually like to specialize in genetics.

Thanks again to all the great people that I have met over the years. I am looking forward to continuing on with my Border Collies for my whole life and will enjoy working with all of you!!!!

I plan to become a veterinarian and specialize in genetics. My involvement with Border Collies has sparked an interest in learning to breed diseases out of dogs and this is my ultimate goal.
