| The Specialty
will feature a number of opportunities for health screening this
year. We will have a *CERF
clinic, a *BAER
clinic and an opportunity to have blood drawn for the
*CEA
and *CL
DNA tests as well as the
*Epilepsy study. It is not possible for us to nail
down the specifics for any of these opportunities at this early
date however, we do know the following details:
CERF & BAER Clinics:
- NOTE 9.24.05 - The CERF clinic
has been cancelled because of circumstances beyond our
control.
- The BAER clinic
will be held on Thursday, October 13.
- You will need to bring your
dog’s registration number, birth date, tattoo or microchip
number, past CERF exam and pedigree.
- There will also be a limited
number of spots available at the Specialty. Once we have the
final details, you will be notified and appointment times can
be arranged.
Blood Draws - CEA DNA, CL DNA,
Epilepsy:
-
If you are interested in
participating in either of these clinics, please e-mail
Lisa or mail to Lisa
Pruka, 10321 Harrison Rd, Rockton IL 61072. She doesn't
need any additional information other than the fact that you are
interested so that we can have some idea how many dogs we should
plan for. This will also help us in setting up times to have
someone available to do blood draws.
- The CEA DNA test will be held
in conjunction with a 20/20 clinic through OptiGen.
Registration for the test can be completed online. Cost of the
test is $180 – in conjunction with the 20/20 clinic the cost
is reduced by 20%. If you register online, the cost is reduced
by another 5%. The paperwork for the test can be
completed beforehand and brought to the blood draw or we will
have forms available at the test site. For more
information about the CEA DNA test please consult the
OptiGen
web site.
- The Epilepsy study is being
run by the University of Missouri. There is paperwork to fill
out for the test that can be found on the web at
http://www.canine-epilepsy.net/ or we will have copies of
the forms at the test site.
- Blood will be drawn at various
times throughout the week depending on when we can find a vet
or vet tech willing to do the blood draws. Any submissions
will be completely confidential.

Testing: an eye exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist;
results can be submitted to the Canine Eye Registry Foundation
(CERF).

Evoked Response – tests the ability of the dog to hear – one
test covers the dog for its lifetime; results can be submitted
to OFA.
* CEA DNA Test: blood is drawn and
tested for the presence of the mutant gene that causes Collie
Eye Anomoly – the test can also find dogs that are carriers;
results can be submitted to OFA.
* CL DNA Test: Either a blood draw or a
cheek swab that is submitted and tested for the presence of the
CL gene (this test is brand new as of 6/2005 so a limited amount
of information is available).
