BCSA Board of Directors
Terri Clingerman, Corresponding Secretary

Return to Board page

Hi, my name is Terri Clingerman and I’m honored to be nominated for a second term as Corresponding Secretary. One of the nice things about this job is helping people who have questions or problems. I’ve also gotten to know quite a few club members as a result of being on the board, and that’s really nice too.

I started competing in obedience in 1991, with Labradors. We had a great time and I stayed in the sport. Over the years, three of my Labs earned OTCHs plus multiple titles in tracking, agility, and hunt tests.

I’ve admired Border Collies for a number of years and about 6 years or so ago, decided it was time to add one to our family. My Labs were all from working lines, and I liked the idea that BCs were first developed as a true working dog, by shepherds who relied on them to manage their flocks. To make a long story short, I brought Rhys home from Dee Penatzer in February 2003. He’s a joy to live with and to train, and is a true companion. I’m very lucky to have him! We compete in obedience and herding, and dabble a bit in agility. Rhys quickly earned his CD, CDX, and UD and then last fall topped it off by finishing his OTCH at the BCSA National Specialty. It was so exciting to finish there! Rhys earned BCSA’s Versatility award that week as well, when he finished his NJP title. When we aren’t doing obedience, we’re herding. We started when Rhys was 10 months old and it’s completely addicting. I now have my own sheep and we go to trials. He finished his AKC herding championship two years ago and has points towards his AHBA championship. He’s also running in Open in big field herding trials. I’ve enjoyed training and trialing so much that I write about it in a column for Borderlines.

Of course our next dog had to be another BC. <g> “Jet” joined the family two years ago. I met his breeder (Joyce Norris) at one of the first nationals I attended and when I found out that she had bred one of her bitches to Claudia Frank’s “Jaydee” I knew that was the right litter for me. Jet turns two this summer and is currently training in obedience and herding. He’s coming along very well and is showing a lot of talent in herding. I’m really looking forward to trialing him in the future; I know we’ll really enjoy it. Jet is the funniest BC, he loves to hug people (he literally does hug!) and lick their ears.

I like to be active in clubs, as much as my schedule allows. Before I became Corresponding Secretary in 2007, I had co-chaired Trophies at two of our National Specialties. I have lots of other club experience; I’ve held various officer positions in my local obedience club, chaired obedience trials, and so on for the past 18 years. I’m a member of a local all-breed kennel club and work on the judge’s selection committee. I’m also an AKC obedience judge and am a member of the current Obedience Advisory Committee. I think that’s about it! I look forward to serving BCSA as an officer for the next couple of years.
