Black dogs with a Split white face may have been purposely selected for by hill shepherds according to Carole Presberg, "A shepherd who owns two dogs and works them in hill conditions, would want to be able to tell them apart at a distance. if one of them has a mostly black head, and one of them has a half-white face, they'd be clearly distinguishable from far away".
